The Upcycled Trading Company provides a range of beautifully designed products, bespoke upcycling commissions, and interior design services to clients and customers throughout Kent and the South East.

The Upcycled Trading Company

The Upcycled Trading Company was created by founder Claire Rickner who began studying interior design with JJAADA Academy in 2009. Claire took a break from studies having been asked by a tutor to work with them on a number of varied residential and commercial projects based around South West London.

This experience helped develop a strong appreciation for quality over quantity and this has been the inspiration behind the business. What began as a hobby upcycling unloved but quality furniture developed into the beginnings of the business driven by a keen appreciation that unique, quality, bespoke furniture and other products are far more desirable than mass produced inferior quality pieces.

Expanding on this ethos the idea came about for a shop providing sustainable interior design alongside products and services according to the principles of responsible consumerism or as we like to call it “kinda consumerism.” Every piece of furniture, gift or accessory is either carefully re-purposed, upcycled, recycled, hand-made, eco-friendly, locally sourced or fair trade.

Never one to be complacent Claire is always looking to expand her knowledge and currently continues her interior design studies with KLC School of Design she is also a registered student member of the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID).

The Upcycled Trading Company challenges the notion that interior design and commissioning bespoke and unique furniture is a service available only to the very wealthy.

The shop is based in the Corner House, a beautiful 14th century building full of history in the medieval Kent village of Lenham and provides a perfect setting for what has become a collaborative business in many senses of the word.

Whether it’s stocking the handmade, upcycled and repurposed furniture and products of other local contributors or providing workshops so that customers can try their hand at upcycling projects of their own TUT Co supports local and understands the importance of collaboration over competition.

“I have been friends with Claire for about 8 years, I first met Claire at a private college in Clapham where I was currently teaching. Right from the start Claire, showed not only talent, but a flair for design, and that coupled with her determination and enthusiasm has led her onto many wonderful and life changing design led experiences today. I am so pleased that you have opened your shop Claire and I hope you have lots of fun as I know that you have wanted to do this for a long time."
